PADM 6440 Research Methods
Fall 2023
From your experience, if you were to describe this course to another, what would you tell them is the topic of the course, its objectives, things they might learn, and key takeaways.
Research Methods focus on being able to critically think about data gathered and analyzed in the field of public administration. Not only do we discuss methods and various ways to analyze data, but we also discuss ethics and how to effectively gather the best data possible. Whether collecting raw data or reading an article interpreting data, this class allows a greater awareness and competency in data assessment skills.
How does the instruction you received in this course relate to the Core Competencies of the MPA program work, and how can they be applied to what you are doing in public administration or will be doing?
Data collection and analysis is key to public service. Best practices in any public administration position require efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency, which are all better achieved through the use of data. Whether it is public opinion or internal data measurements, we need data to understand where we can improve or whether or not our efforts are effective. Research requires critical thinking and consideration of ethics for those involved in any study.
How did this course relate to other courses you have taken in the program? Explain
The ability to collect and analyze data has been important for every class in the MPA program. Human Resources should be using data to understand employee satisfaction and effectiveness of various training or public programs. Looking at policy requires understanding the research and data to choose the best method of implementation. A good leader looks for feedback from employees, which is best done using quantitative and qualitative data to understand strengths and weaknesses and ways to improve. Research and data play a role in every course of the MPA program.
Reflect and describe key elements of this course that were particularly meaningful to you and how you will apply them to your life, profession, or other areas.
Every area of public service is affected by research and data. We need to understand best practices and new and more effective ways to serve and improve in any part of public service. I am using the research methods to create a survey for my students to get feedback on my effectiveness as a teacher and learn what subjects and areas I need to improve. In prevention science, we need data to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs and public perception of the issues our community faces.

Final
We learned the variety of statistical analysis tools and tests that can be used in research methods. Choosing the correct test is key to understanding outcomes and using data to understand the numbers collected during research.
