PADM 6990 - Capstone

Spring 2024

From your experience, if you were to describe this course to another, what would you tell them is the topic of the course, its objectives, things they might learn, and key takeaways.

The Capstone course has been an accumulation of all the work done in the MPA program.  The projects and case studies helped solidify the principles we have learned throughout the program.   The front porch discussions proved very beneficial for brainstorming ideas and effective application of the aspects of public administration we discussed.  An important purpose of the course is to connect with the other soon-to-be MPA graduates and build a network of people to trust and reach out to for collaboration and support.

How does the instruction you received in this course relate to the Core Competencies of the MPA program work, and how can they be applied to what you are doing in public administration or will be doing?

Working with the Town of Virgin on the economic development plan incorporates the economic policy process, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.  Our discussions allowed us to share our experiences and frustrations in our field and brainstorm how to improve the ways that we serve in our sectors.

How did this course relate to other courses you have taken in the program? Explain

The course was designed to take our classes and various areas of expertise and strengthen each other through discussion and project-based work. The purpose of the case study was to help us solidify the knowledge we have gained and apply it to a real-world scenario.  Critical Thinking and Ethics, along with Leadership and Management were two courses that directly related to our discussions and case study.  Human Resources plays a huge role in all aspects of public administration and in our discussions about communication.   My experiential learning and professional project helped prepare me to support my team in building the economic plan for the Town of Virgin.

Reflect and describe key elements of this course that were particularly meaningful to you and how you will apply them to your life, profession, or other areas.

The synchronous discussions have been a highlight of the program for me and I appreciate how much interaction I had with my classmates during the capstone.  The project-based work also allowed me to collaborate get to know my team and build relationships which can only enhance learning and growth. I enjoyed Stephen King's "On Writing" for the very applicable advice about written communication, which is an important part of public service, whether internally or when addressing the public or in my classroom.   Ultimately, this course brought the last two years of learning together to remind me of how far I have come and the confidence I have gained in my abilities to serve effectively in whatever capacity I choose to pursue.

Local Government Case Study Competition

Being part of a team that competed again BYU in a case competition was a highlight of the program for me.  My team worked hard to provide principle based recommendations based on the fianancial and ethical issues in the case.  We were able to move on the final round and came in 2nd to the other SUU team.

Town of Virgin Economic Development Strategic Plan

As a team, we completed a full economic plan for the Town of Virign.  We worked in real-time with the Mayor of Virign and residents.  This document provides an updated and accurate look and the current economics in Virgin and can help them understand and overcome obstacles as they move forward.

Stephen King - On Living

I loved Stephen King's perspective about our careers.  While they are meaningful, the most important things are the people we love.

Stephen King - On Writing

King's tools for good writing were simple and to the point.

Stephen King - On Writing

I appreciated King's message about being humble about our work, accepting criticism, and also remembering we do not have to please everyone.

Personal Career Timeline

I was surprised by how meaningful this assignment was to me.  Reflecting on my life, education, and career choices showed me how far I have come, which can be easy to forget when we are constantly working toward the next we need or want.  Taking a moment to reflect and enjoy my progress allows me to better appreciate where I am and gain clarity on the next steps.  I feel so much gratitude for the path that led me to my career in Prevention Science and the MPA program.
